Active Participation

General Statement

Active participation in distributed learning is equivalent to attendance in a school and is a requirement under the School Act and the Independent School Act. To be funded by the Ministry of Education and Child Care for a distributed learning course or program, SelfDesign Learning Community (SDLC) must have evidence of active participation prior to submission of the 1701 form which is the application for educational funding for each learner.

Policy

Full Time: Grades K-9

Our learner files for full-time Grade K – 9 learners will contain dated evidence that a learner is active on or before the dates listed in the 1701 Instructions. This will include a SelfDesign learning plan which includes documented commitment from a parent. The Learning Plan will include goals, activities, and strategies and the learning standards linked to those goals, the learning resources, and the assessment strategies. Additionally, our learner files will contain evidence of the learners’ active participation with their learning plan three weeks following that date.

Cross-enrolled: Grades 8-9

SDLC will only enrol learners in grades 8-9 for which SDLC will be school of record.  SDLC does not allow learners to cross-enrol with SDLC for grades 8-9 courses.

Full Time: Grades 10-12

On or before the date listed for the 1701 form, SDLC learner files for all learners in grades 10 -12 (including all adults learners) will contain the following:

  1. A clear course plan on file for each course that links to the course’s learning standards, performance standards, required resources and assessment strategies. This course plan is the evidence supporting the requirement that assigned work is meeting the learning standards.
  2.  A current course selection or enrolment form that lists the distributed learning courses reported for funding that meet graduation requirements.
  3. Substantive learner activity in each course representing a minimum of five percent of the course’s learning activities will be in evidence in each learner’s file.
  4. The activity will be clearly linked to the learning standards of each course.
  5. The activity will be assessed by the educator and entered in the learner records, dated on or before the date the learner became active.
