Appendix A

The Services

In carrying out the Contract Services of this agreement, the Contractor shall agree to meet to the best of their professional capacity the contents of this agreement, and the Standards for Delivery of K-12 Independent School Distributed Learning in British Columbia 2021-22 as provided in Schedule A of the contract between SelfDesign Learning Foundation and the Ministry of Education, where these standards apply to the professional activities of certified teachers. In addition, the Contractor shall endeavor to uphold to the best of their professional capacity the standards of the teaching profession in British Columbia as detailed by the Teacher Regulation Branch of the Ministry of Education.

Supporting compliance with respect to the Educational Program

  • I will assist in providing information about learners and families as required by the Ministry of Education.

Supporting Compliance with Respect to Role of Teacher

  • I will maintain good standing with the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB); to notify the SelfDesign HR team in a timely manner of any significant changes to professional status, and of any change of availability to SelfDesign. Clause 5 of the Educator Contract provides for either party to provide the other with 15 days’ notice in writing including email, or via verbal conversation.
  •  I will ensure I understand the requirements to fulfill my responsibilities as outlined in educator guidelines, Contractor Resource Centre, Org. Updates, and Spaces as needed.
  • I will participate in educator support activities provided by SelfDesign, specifically but not limited to, engagement in the Discuss forum throughout the year.
  • I will attend all required orientations provided by SelfDesign to ensure I fully understand my role as educator and contractor.
  • I will engage in a Self Check to support the monitoring of my contract work.
  • I will incorporate First Peoples’ Principles of Learning (FPPoL) in my work with learners, wherever possible.
  • I will retain in confidence personal information that may be construed as sensitive or confidential, and to notify SelfDesign of any information received while performing the Services that may be construed as a breach of personal safety or law; all online interactions within the systems and applications provided by SelfDesign will be considered to be covered by the Personal Information Privacy Act.

Planning for Learning

Educational Program — LC K-9 only

Educational Program — LC 10-12 only

  • I will work in collaboration with learners and families to develop learning plans within 3 weeks of enrolment. Learning plans reflect the passions and interests of the learner.
  • I will work with learners and families to ensure that learning plans support the needs of each learner’s developmental level and individual profile as much as is feasible and understandable.
  • I will provide support to the learners and families around goal-setting and self-assessment of the SelfDesign Core Competencies as a part of the learning planning and seasonal learning communications process.
  • I will prepare a learning plan summary in educator voice and identify which of the SelfDesign Library Learning Experiences that connect to the Provincial curricular competencies are coherent with the plan.
  • I will prepare a plan with the family that will identify the Learning Resources and Services to support the personal learning plan. I will gather the necessary information about resources and services from families and will submit purchase requests.
  • I will ensure that the learning plan is stored in the SelfDesign Learning Platform and include references to resources and forms of assessment on the SelfDesign Library Learning Experiences which connect to the curricular competencies. The learning plan can be changed and updated on a regular basis as the learner progresses throughout the year.
  • I will utilize the SelfDesign learning areas and the Learning Experiences Library in the learning plan, which are connected to the curricular competencies of the BC Ministry of Education, including the Authority provided curricular competencies and standards for non-core areas.
  • I will engage in educational conversations with families on a weekly basis about the progress of the learning plan through the Observing for Learning Process and maintain records in the SelfDesign Learning Platform.
  • I will make assessments using the Learning Experiences Library and assessment processes and strategies, which are intended to reflect the emerging learning plan through the weekly Observing for Learning.
  • I will document any changes to the learning plan that may occur.
  • I will provide learning communications during the learning year which serve as reviews of the learning plans within the Organizational timelines provided.
  • I will identify through the planning process the plans for daily physical activity by learners and I will advise learners and/or parents of this requirement for learners in MySELF themes.
  • I will provide support to the learners and families around goal-setting and self-assessment of the Core Competencies as a part of the seasonal learning communications processes.
  • I will prepare a Path to Completion as the educator learning plan which includes the courses leading toward grad, adult grad or school completion as identified in collaboration with the learner and family.
  • I will document any changes to theme selection and/or course plan as they occur. 
  • I will ensure that the learning documents are stored in the SelfDesign Learning Platform and systems, as prescribed. 
  • I will engage in educational conversations with learners and families on a weekly basis about the progress of the learning plan through the Observing for Learning Process and maintain records in the SelfDesign Learning Platform, as prescribed.
  • I will provide learning communications during the learning year which serve as reviews of emergent learning activities and progress in Career Life courses, as applicable, within the Organizational timelines provided.

Assessing Learning

Educational Program — LC 10-12 only

  • I will be involved in frequent and ongoing assessment that addresses Provincial or Authority approved curricular competencies as applicable.
  • I will connect indicators of learning from the weekly Observing for Learning  provided by parents and learners by referencing the week number containing content on the learner’s progress and will add this information to the Highlights of Learning document.
  • I will provide anecdotal formative assessment through weekly educational conversation for learners in the Observing for Learning process.
  • I will provide, within the Organizational timelines set out, learning communications which serve as summative assessment and review of learner progress on learning plans.
  • I will be involved in frequent and ongoing assessment that addresses Provincial or Authority approved curricular competencies as applicable.
  • I will participate in the collaborative assessment process with the learning specialists according to the timeline set out by the Organization.
  • I will engage in anecdotal formative assessment through weekly conversation with learners in the Observing for Learning process.
  • I will provide, within the Organizational timelines set out, learning communications which serve as summative assessment and review of learner progress on activities in themes and courses.
  • I will support learners to participate in the provincial graduation assessments required by the Dogwood Diploma Program, at appropriate times, and engage in communication about the individual needs of my learner with Guidance.

Engaging Learning

Educational Program — LC 10-12 only

  • I will engage with learners to activate their courses in the manner provided by the Organization.
  • I will make contact with the learner using telephone, face-to-face (when feasible), online audio and video conferencing (Direct Connection) at least twice per year.
  • I will work to maintain contract agreements with SelfDesign by conserving good relationships between myself, learners, and families.
  • I will agree to alert the Contact Assistance Team (CAT) if I am unable to contact or engage with learners and/or families after one (1) week of attempting to contact them, and Educator Assist if I have Educator workflow issues or questions.
  • I agree to use the various delivery mediums provided by SelfDesign including the SelfDesign Learning Platform and other SelfDesign systems as well as other forms that support learner/educator interaction such as telephone and video conference. Educators will maintain the evidence of this communication using the systems provided by SelfDesign for this purpose.
  • I will engage with families using the SelfDesign learning platform on a weekly basis through the Observing for Learning process to provide guidance on the resources, activities and needs of the learner in fulfilling their learning plan and to assess the learning that is reported.
  • I will engage with learners to activate their courses in the manner provided by the Organization.
  • I will make contact with the learner using telephone, face-to-face (when feasible), online audio and video conferencing (Direct Connection) at least twice per month or document with Contact Assistance Team situations where this is not feasible.
  • I will work to maintain contract agreements with SelfDesign by conserving good relationships between myself, learners, and families.
  • I will agree to alert the Contact Assistance Team if I am unable to contact or engage with learners and/or families no later than after one (1) week of attempting to contact them, and Educator Assist if I have Educator workflow issues or questions.

Supporting compliance with respect to the Educational Program

Educational Program — LC K-9 only

Educational Program — LC 10-12 only

  • I will support learners enrolled in the grades required for FSA testing by advising parents on the SelfDesign FSA approach and the requirements for participation. SelfDesign will provide FSA messaging and support through the FSA Team. Only learners working with replacement competencies may be excused.
  • I will support learners (seeking the Dogwood) enrolled in the grades required for Provincial Graduation Assessments by advising learners/parents/guardians of this requirement. SelfDesign will provide messaging and support through the Guidance Team.
  • I will seek out learner supports for Provincial Assessments (such as readers and/or scribes) for learners who are eligible and request these supports.

Educational Program – Learning Specialist

Planning for Learning
  • I engage and become familiar with weekly content, resources, and challenges.
  • I support learners with diverse needs and review IEPs as soon as they are available to me.
  • I use the real-time meeting agenda within my theme as prescribed.
  • I use the Greetings feature weekly, as prescribed.
  • I follow Learning Specialist guidelines and other provided support materials.
Assessing Learning
  • I will be involved in frequent and ongoing assessment that addresses Provincial or Authority approved curricular competencies as applicable.
  • I complete assessments of learning artifacts within 7 days of receipt of the submission.
  • I utilize language from the SelfDesign Rubrics (Dogwood path themes) or I CAN (MySELF themes) Assessment Framework in my formative and summative feedback.
  • I engage in collaborative assessment with learning consultants in accordance with learning communication guidelines.
  • I track weekly learner engagement, assessment and missed submissions.
Engaging Learning
  • I will engage with learners to activate their courses in the manner provided by the Organization.
  • I plan and facilitate weekly real-time meetings (1.5 hours per theme) for learners.
  • I host weekly, consistent open office hours (1 hour per theme) for learners to receive personalized support for their learning.
  • I use the Discuss Forum to support learners in my theme or add-on in asynchronous discussion.
  • I will work to maintain contract agreements with SelfDesign by conserving good relationships between myself, learners, and families.
  • I will contact Educator Assist if I have educator workflow issues or questions.
  • g. I agree to use the various delivery mediums provided by SelfDesign including the SelfDesign Learning Platform and other SelfDesign systems as well as other forms that support learner/educator interaction such as video conference. SE Services – All Educators providing High Incidence services or Low Incidence services

Planning for Learning
  • I will work in collaboration with neurodiverse learners and their families to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) within timelines set out by the Organization.
  • I will work with learners and families to ensure that IEPs support the needs of each learner’s developmental level and individual profile as much as is feasible and understandable based on the diagnostic data and assessments. This includes identifying when a learner would benefit from replacement competencies or supplemental support(s) that may be required to support the learner’s education program.
  • I will refer to the diagnostic data and assessments to develop the Present Level of Functioning (PLOF) document, in order to identify complex needs to be addressed in the IEP.
  • I will work with the family to identify the appropriate support services to match the IEP goals for each learner.
  • I will prepare, approve and manage an IEP Support and Resource Plan with the family that will identify the Support Education Services which SelfDesign will fund to support the IEP.
  • I will develop the IEP Support and Resource Plan for Support Education Services correlated with the IEP and document any changes that may occur throughout the year. The overall budget is approved by the Principal.
  • I will ensure that the IEP and the IEP Support and Resource Plan are stored within SelfDesign systems, as prescribed, and include references to resources and assessment strategies. The IEP and the IEP Support and Resources Plan can be changed and updated on a regular basis, as the learner progresses throughout the year. I will document any changes that occur.
Assessing Learning
  • I will make assessments to reflect the emerging IEP on an on-going basis via the weekly contact through Observing for Learning process with the learner and family and complete seasonal IEP reviews to indicate progress on IEP goals within the IEP.
Engaging Learning
  • I will engage in weekly conversations with learners/families and document any progress towards IEP goals, as prescribed by SelfDesign.
