Policy Statement

SelfDesign Learning Foundation (SDLF)  is committed to developing, communicating and upholding program agreements which are aligned with the mission and values of SDLF as well as the mandates, requirements and agreements with regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Education and Child Care and WorksafeBC. SDLF ensures that program agreements for each of its educational programs and offerings, including SelfDesign Learning Community and HomeLearners Network, support participants and contractors with clarity around roles, rights, responsibilities and compliance procedures if the agreements are not met.

Definitions

Program Agreements – Program agreements clearly outline the roles and responsibilities, participation requirements, and rights and expectations for participants and their legal parent/guardian, engaging in SelfDesign Learning Community and/or HomeLearners Network offerings. May also be called “learner agreement” or “Kid’s Pledge”.

Policy

SelfDesign Learning Foundation requires learners and the parents/guardians of learners participating in our education programs and offerings to sign and adhere to program agreements. Program agreements outline the responsibilities, rights, and tasks required of parents/guardians, learners, support providers, contractors, and volunteers when engaging in SDLF programs. For select programs, participants and/or their legal guardian/parent may also need to sign and adhere to learner agreements and/or Kid’s Pledge, which provide additional details for learners participating in the programmatic offerings. This ensures SDLF’s ability to enforce compliance measures and meet commitments to families.

Protocol

SelfDesign Learning Community (SDLC) publishes program agreements at the beginning of the enrollment timeframe each year.

  • Program agreements are the formal agreement a family enters into with SDLC to state that they will support their child(ren) in meeting both the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Child Care as well as the programmatic elements of SDLC, including optional offerings both online and in-person.
  • Learner agreements are the informal agreements a learner makes at the time of grades 10-12 activation.
  • SDLC requires all parents/guardians of K-12 learners to agree to program agreements at the time of enrolment.
  • Program agreements form the basis of compliance measures of participation which are supported and enforced by the procedures of the Contact Assistance Team.
  • Adherence to the program agreements, including learner weekly participation, is tracked in the online systems, and clear follow-up and documentation procedures are followed when the agreements are not met.
  • Not meeting program agreements may result in either a trial enrollment period or the withdrawal of a learner from their educational program.

HomeLearners Network (HLN) is an elective program. HLN’s published Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy, and Kid’s Pledge together constitute the program agreement.

  • All parents/guardians are required to review and agree to the published terms & conditions, Privacy Policy, and Kid’s Pledge at the time of account creation for their learner to participate in any HLN activity offerings.
  • The Kid’s Pledge is an informal agreement that outlines the behaviour and participation expectations a learner and their parent/guardian must follow during participation in HLN activities.
  • Adherence to the Kid’s Pledge is monitored by HLN contractors during live, online activities. Learners are reminded of the Kid’s Pledge at the beginning of every activity. As and when needed HLN contractors may redirect learners during an activity to ensure compliance.
  • Escalation procedures are in place when the Kid’s Pledge is breached and repeated redirection during a live activity is unsuccessful. These procedures include parent/guardian consultation, collaboration, and appropriate documentation to address instances of non-compliance. Not meeting program agreements may result in learner removal from HLN activity offerings.
  • Adherence to the terms and conditions and privacy policy agreements are monitored to ensure compliance.
  • Any questions or concerns regarding HLN’s program agreements can be directed to info@homelearnersnetwork.ca.
